You want your bedroom to be a place of calm and peace, and the amount of bedroom storage space you have can affect that peace and calm. Your bed is where you retreat each night, to rejuvenate your mind and body for the next day. Since many bedrooms are too small, however, you may have too much clutter and disorganization in your room to really relax and let go of your worries. Fear not, though, because you can solve your storage issues by more effectively using the space you have.
Your bed is normally the biggest furniture piece in your room, and it can double as a storage area, too. If your bed is high enough, or built on a base with drawers, you can use the space underneath for storage. This space can be used for out-of-season shoes and clothes, as well as gift wrappings, luggage and workout mats and exercise equipment that folds up. If you don't want a bed that high, put up a headboard that will double as a bookshelf, and a place for your alarm clock and remotes.
Armoires are a great place to store clothing. These free-standing units usually have drawers and a place for hanging clothes. You can keep all of the clothing for the current season there, where it will be easily accessed. As one season turns to the next, you can store the unneeded clothes toward the back of your closet, and move the current season's clothes to the forefront. In this way, your closet will stay organized, since you'll use it less. You will also enjoy less clutter of clothes year-round, by utilizing all of your bedroom storage areas.
You can also use decorative boxes and chests to store blankets, sweaters and shirts. Chests can be used for throws and seasonal bedding. Use your closet space wisely, making sure you don't store things on the floor. You can install an extra rod that hangs at waist level, and use the top level for the clothes you wear most often – this will keep them at eye level. In this way, you won't have to rummage through clothes you are not wearing this season, to get to the outfits you need. You can also buy shoe organizers that hang over your closet door, if you don't have a place for shoes in your closet already. Use floor space for stacking the boxes and chests of clothing for other seasons.
You've spent a lot on your work and and play clothing, and you'll want to keep them in excellent condition, whether they are hanging or boxed away for a season. Long dresses and coats will need a full area so that they can hang easily. You can design your closet to be deep enough to comfortably hold a hangar, because this width will be needed for all your hanging clothes. You can also choose between drawers and shelves, based on what type of garment you're storing, whether it's sweaters, handbags, shirts, etc. Knowing what you have to store makes bedroom storage an easier chore to tackle.
